Troubleshooting WhatsApp Messages Showing the Wrong Country Code
If you’re trying to send a WhatsApp message through Penny and notice the number has the wrong country code (e.g., +1 instead of your contact’s actual location), the issue is likely related to how the contact's number is formatted.
What causes this issue?
Penny uses the phone number saved in your contact record exactly as it appears. If the number doesn’t include the correct international dialing code (e.g., +44, +61, +27), Penny may default to using +1 (United States/Canada), which can cause WhatsApp to open the wrong chat or fail to recognize the number entirely.
How to fix it:
Open your phone’s contact list.
Confirm the number is saved in full international format, including the + and correct country code.
✅ Correct:
+44 7700 900123
(UK),+61 400 123 456
(Australia),+27 82 123 4567
(South Africa)❌ Incorrect:
07700 900123
,0400 123 456
, or missing the +
Return to Penny and edit your contact:
Go the Contacts section
Choose the contact, click edit and update the information
💡 Tip: If you've recently edited a contact, it may take a few minutes for Penny to reflect the changes. Try waiting a moment before attempting to resend the message, or log out and log back in to refresh.
